By way of explanation Explanation: When goods are "shipped" by rail, the freight charge includes an element to allow the consignee to unload the goods; this might be an allowance of 48 hours, or so. Beyond this time, the consignee would have to pay the "demurrage" charge for detaining the wagon beyond the permitted unloading time. If you think about it, this is not unreasonable either; a lorry driver can bellow at you until you get his lorry unloaded, and that's something the average railway freight wagon cannot do - yet... |
