Волшебник еще помнил те времена, когда улицы освещали Светлячки. Они трудились изо всех сил, но они были такие маленькие, что даже когда их собиралось много, они должны были лететь все вместе впереди идущего, чтобы хоть что-то было видно. Но если в это время навстречу шел другой прохожий, то им приходилось светить уже двоим. Вот тут и начиналась настоящая ***толкучка***, потому что половина летела в одну сторону, а другая половина в обратную, и создавалась страшная неразбериха.

That’s when начиналась настоящая толкучка, for one half of them would fly this way, and the other that way, which caused a great confusion.

Не вполне уверен, какое слово тут подобрать для "толкучки". Может, clutter?

A simpler alternative might be \"That\'s when it really got crowded.\" \"Crowded\" is really plain IMHO, but it\'s a decent direct translation.
