The opposite of my question on "travaux dirigés". I know that a "cours magistrale" is the one in the auditorium, but what do you say in English? "Theoretical course"?

Of course! It has been so long since I was at school...But now I am wondering how to differentiate it from "travaux dirigé", which is the smaller classroom sort of situation but still the prof in France just natters at you while you take notes.

neutral  Maria-Teresa Zenteno: I`m afraid it is not the same. A lecture is not necessarily offered by a scholar, while a "cours magistrale" is usually offered by an expert among the experts.... please someone correct me if I`m wrong....
