To me, 助理总经理 = Assistant GM and 总经理助理 = GM's assistant (like a secretary), but in the text I am translating right now it seems that 总经理助理 = Assistant GM. Can this be right??

it\'s very likely to mean assistant GM. This depends on the administrative structure of the company. If there are divisions/sections under this position, it can be sure that it means assistant GM. Cf: 市长助理 (Associate or assistant mayor), 部长助理沈国放(Associate or assistant Minister Shen).

On the other hand, Assistant GM must be a 光杆儿司令, 也就是秘书.

I've decided to use "Assistant General Manager" because the clients are from U.S. and Singapore. "General Manager Assistant" is just too misleading in this context. Lesley made a very good point on this.
