German term or phrase: Aufarbeitung
Die Arbeit mit den Bestaenden der SED ist unerlaesslich fuer die Aufarbeitung der Geschichte der DDR und damit der juengeren deutschen Geschichte.

I've looked at the many possible translations of Aufarbeitung and I can't find one that fits here. Can anyone help? TIA

I'm sure I could use almost all of the suggestions made but I like "critical interpretation" best. Thanks to everyone!

or even "to come to terms with."
I would rephrase: "...is indispensible in order to arrive..."
Aufarbeitung has many connotations, don't think there is a noun in English encompassing all of them.

Explanation:
I think in this case it's more along the lines of "coming to terms with DDR history, and therefore the more recent German history..."

Explanation:
My understandin is that Aufarbeitung means "reconditioning." Now, the tick is to find a synonym that fits your context. Good luck in any case!
