arrive at an understanding of..., make sense of... Explanation: or even "to come to terms with." I would rephrase: "...is indispensible in order to arrive..." Aufarbeitung has many connotations, don't think there is a noun in English encompassing all of them. |

coming to terms with... Explanation: I think in this case it's more along the lines of "coming to terms with DDR history, and therefore the more recent German history..." |
