Can "respectively" mean "or" in the following sentence ?
In the past, I have encountered a context where "respectively" could mean nothing but "or".

>This flag can only be set if the content node type >is 'page', respectively 'composition'.

And the following sentence appears before the above sentence.
>Pages are also called "compositions".

If not what could it mean? I think it couldn't mean "それぞれ".

agree  Katalin Horváth McClure: This can be right, if the English is saying "Pages are also called 'compositions'. This flag can only be set if the content node type >is 'page', IN OTHER WORDS, 'composition'." つまり is the best interpretation of that meaning.

  -> I assume the "composition" comes in to distinguish structured layout from the underlying paper page or something.
agree  Ralf A. Schumacher: Had the same impression that the original text might be German, at least concerning the usage of "respectively" in the same way as "beziehungsweise". For the original question, I would go with "tsumari" or "mata wa", and for the add'l problem "sorezore".

リーダーズ英和を始め多くの辞書に「個別に」という訳があります。ここでも、「pagesが問題になる場合のひとつひとつを＜個別に＞見てみると、同じものを指すのにcompositionsという言葉が使われている場合もある」という意味で使われているのではないでしょうか。で、結局「または」という訳になってしまうのでは、と思います。「特定の場合には〜とも呼ばれる」「〜と呼ばれる場合もある」でもいいかな、と思います。

agree  humbird: "Matawa = or" is closer than "tsumari" to original meaning. However author's usage of "respectively" is wrong.

If ¥"respectively¥" is used to mean ¥"tsumari = namely, that is to say¥", or similar, the author does not know English. The answer and other pro answerers¥' comments are based on inference. Then both English and Japanese are incorrect.

agree  Kurt Hammond: The original English sentence in the asker's question is awkward and the meaning is confusing to even me, a native speaker. If the usage is correct, it should nearly always mean それぞれ, however.
