soul flower Explanation: Like using "hati" (liver) for "heart", folk Malay used "semangat" instead of "roh" to mean "soul" & vice versa "roh" eg "roh jahat" (evil spirits) for spirits. Bunga semangat is a night-blooming scented flower with lotus-shaped petals - some call them bunga pakma (not to be confused with rafflesia), some bunga santalia (not harum sundal malam) - alias bunga bakawali (believed to be a spell-bound princess). This motif is common in some Kelantan, Thai & Indonesian batik and also in songket and carvings. sorry cant get a reference/url. hth |
