People used stars to navigate their way before compasses and other tools. Children born recently have so many electronic gadgets at their disposal, it makes it hard to imagine a world without them.

Explanation:
Cannot imagine how it is like. Cannot understand such thing because it is beyond their own experience.
This is not necessarily the meaning of "tough", but under this context this is what it means.
