neutral  Gerrit Jan Groothedde: As to the difference you wondered about, "spoel" stands for any reel or spool, whereas "bobijn" is Belgian Dutch for coil, which in Dutch can correctly be called "(elektrische) spoel".

Explanation:
According to my Collins dictionary a bobbin is specific type of spool, namely "a spool or reel on which thread or yarn is wound, being unwound as required". This makes sense to me, as the only context I've heard bobbin in, is for sewing machines.
The dictionary also gives it as "a spool on which insulated wire is wound to form the coil of a small electromagnetic device, such as a bell or buzzer". So may be that's the electrical side of it.
In any case, to me a spool is just a more general word than bobbin.
