O que é a cabeceira? Não é mais do que a prate de cima da igreja, que no caso particular da Dé do Porto é constituída de 3 capelas, uma principal e duas laterais.

É uma verdadeira obra de arte a Sé do Porto. Vale a pena visitar.

A cabeceira da Sé (deambulatório, transepto e absidíolos) ficou concluída ainda no século XII, ao contrário, a construção da parte restante (naves da igreja), recomeçou cerca de 1250 devendo ter terminado já no reinado de D. Dinis.

Lendo bem o sítio do turismo do Porto, o mesmo diz o seguinte:

Em português: Embora a cabeceira actual seja obra do início do século XVII

Em inglês: Although the current highest part is a work of art from the early 17th century


Portanto, penso que a minha sugestão inicial está correcta e, na minha opinião pessoal, será melhor dizer \"top of the nave\" than \"the highest part\", na medida em que \"highest\" implica altura.

Explanation:
O termo cabeceira em português tem muitos significados, dentro os quais o de altar, ou altar mor (Aurélio). No caso da frase "a cabeceira da Sé" seria o altar mor da Sé, cuja tradução em inglês poderia ser high altar ou mesmo só altar

disagree  Mabre: Estou de acordo com o termo chancel - embora esteja este termo seja mais usado em ingles para as igrejas protestantes. O Webster's Dictionary define high altar como a area onde encontra-se o altar (pag. 1282) Random House NY 1995

  -> O problema é que a cabeceira é uma área que compreende 3 coisas diferentes, ou seja, o deambulatório, o transepto e os absidíolos (capelas laterais).
