io conosco il termine "shallow" in riferimento a "waters", con il significato di "poco profonde", ma in un contesto del genere non mi è ben chiaro il concetto.

The process of adding nitrogen to the surface of steel parts, using dissociated ammonia as the source. Gas Nitriding develops a very hard case after long time at comparatively low temperature, without quenching.

The process is carried out below the transformation temperature of alloy steels, so that there is no distortion caused by the transformation of the metal. Parts to be nitrided are pre-hardened to the proper strength level, then nitrided at a temperature where the base metal properties are not affected. As a result, a very high strength product with extremely good wear resistance can be produced, with little to no dimensional change.

Io opterei per la versione classica anche se qui sembra poco ortodossa.
Hanno individuato che delle differenze di TT (trattamento termico) da origine a "cases" (involucri?) più basse che sono la causa della rottura dei ganci a molla/moschettoni durante l'utilizzo.

passo su "cases" visto che non conosco il contesto tecnico su cui stai lavorando, ma nei siti che ho visitato si parla spesso di deep and shallow cases, che potrebbe essere tradotto come "profondi/e" e "poco profondi/e".
