カナダ南部とカナダに国境を接する合衆国北部開拓の歴史の始まりは、ビーヴァーの毛皮にありました。これに最初に手をつけたのがフランスであり、ナポレオンのあの有名な帽子もビーヴァーの皮です。したがってフランス語の地名はカナダのケヴェック地方のみならず、全米にいくつも残っています。ミネソタにフランス語の地名があっても少しも不思議はないのです。
