German term or phrase: Gestängeschwimmersensor
This is a device for monitoring fill levels in a tank for controlling a pump. Could this be a 'rod float switch/sensor'?

Für die Niveauerfassung wird ein Gestängeschwimmersensor verwendet. Der Sensor ist
werkseitig in der Hebeanlage verbaut. Eine Niveauerfassung mit Schwimmerschaltern
oder Elektroden ist nicht möglich!

Explanation:
What's making this tricky is that we're not sure what they're trying to differentiate from, or in other words: what's the type of float switch we can't use in that second sentence? We might be able to get more specific if we know. If we can't know, then your guess is definitely a valid option for the Gestängeschwimmersensor in question.

neutral  Johannes Gleim: A "rod" is no "Gestänge", but a "Stange", a lever is more probable, see my references.

lever-type float switch

Explanation:
As "Gestänge" is translated by "lever" rather than by "rod" I add corresponding references:

One type of float switch uses a mercury switch inside a hinged float. Another common type is a float that raises a rod to actuate a microswitch.

Float switches GN 848 can be used to monitor fluid levels by activating an electrical switching contact as soon as a defined filling level is exceeded or falls below a defined mark.
The desired level at which the switching point is to be reached is determined by the length of the float rod.

There are no bellows, springs, or seals to fail. Instead, the free-swinging float attracts a magnet within the solid metal switch body, actuating a snap switch by means of a simple lever arm. Float arm hinge design limits the arm angle to prevent vertical hangup.

The Class 9036 Type D and G float switches are lever operated and designed for open tank applications.

The KD12 float level switch is mounted horizontally in the tank wall, and uses a cylindrical float with a magnet attached to the end of the lever arm that activates a reed type magnetic microswitch in the electrical connection housing as the float rise or falls.
