Gente, é hard vs. soft work. Não tem nada a ver com a dificuldade. "Hard" são estruturas rígidas (concreto, alvenaria) e as "soft" são as flexíveis (massa, solo, vegetação).

Explanation:
Paulinho, não encontrei um termo que traduza o hard, mas pelo que entendi, as construções de proteção de linha de costa são as verticais, normalmente enrocamento aderente e outros tipos, e o tipo suave, que não seria tão íngreme, tomando parte da praia ou área afim.

Indo um pouco mais além, percebo que quando falamos em "estabilização" da linha costa , é referente ao "hard one" e, quando não é "hard", fala-se em progradação ou retrogradação, quando a linha da costa se move em uma edificação mais "suave".
