I don’t see the problem here. Mechanical is a perfectly legit term for things that are, well, mechanical rather than, say, cellular.

The author/ess may not have known the medi-technical term in the source language. We cannot assume omniscience - rather than omnipotence - in every writer or even expert.

I though "automomic" was interesting but then why didn't the writer use the word in Swedish "autonom"?
Using the same reasoning, I ruled out "physiological" which crossed my mind.
I'm starting to think that the safest bet is therefore just to say "mechanical"

To be honest, I was more asking about mechanical rather than consequences (but I'll take your comments into account
Other "symptoms" in this "mechanical" liste are sleep apnea, varicose veins and being accident-prone
Would we say "mechanical" for all these? That's my main problem at present
