agree  Tony M: I can't decide if in the s/t 'functions' has the sense of 'purpose, what they're useful for', or rather 'bodily functions' (as we've seen in another of Asker's questions) — would they both be translated the same in FR?

  -> Thank you, Tony! The good thing about the French term "fonction", here, is that it can also be understood in both ways: "fonctionnement biologique", or "rôle/utilité", so that the remaining ambiguity of the ST is covered in French as well.
