going round the yards Explanation: Literally. As I mentioned in the discussion, it seems to refer to going round the yards of people's houses looking for scraps from the trash. In the UK it is known as "bin raking", but there is probably a similar term used in the US. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 12 hrs (2019-12-10 15:37:04 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- What I was describing is apparently called "dumpster diving" in the US.
