His plays are performed in both Soviet and foreign theaters

Explanation:
https://www.folger.edu/shakespeares-theater

In the centuries that followed, Shakespeare's plays have been performed in England, North America, and around the world, in productions that mirror the state of theater in each place and time: from lavish scenes, to surrealism, to stark bare stages.

Theater performance excludes the interpretation of "theater" as a "movie theater"

Explanation:
Never mind those stages. It is never a good idea to translate an idiom or set phrase, such as this one, verbatim. This is not engineering or clinical trials. What matters in a text like this is that the meaning be clear and that the text read as if it had been written in the target language. IMHO, this approach applies even if the original text is, well, not of a stellar quality (which, unfortunately, is often the case). In the end, the objective is to make a better product rather than the most minutely accurate translation.

His plays are on the stages, both Soviet and Foreign.

Explanation:
Or
If we say "running" it means that the play is running now.
идут has the general meaning here.

His plays are on the stages of both Soviet of Foreign countries.

I would conclude my answer by suggesting this:
I may suggest the following, if without stage, but stage is also good, because stage has broader meaning, and gives the stylistic sense in the original:
His plays are on in both Soviet Union and abroad

Sorry, in my answer, the prep. is missing,
It should be:
His plays are on AT the theaters or stages

Если ставятся, показываются - то "to be on"
Если более не дословный, то - "His plays are welcomed (warmly) by the audiences, both Soviet and Foreign".

disagree  The Misha: This is the most stilted, unnatural and unidiomatic translation of all those proposed so far. One wonders where you get your condidence levels from.
