maison de type concentré house with attached outbuildings Explanation: https://books.google.fr › books Samuel F. Pickering - 1988 - American essays Fifteen miles up the Bay of Fundy from Yarmouth, the farm consists of an old house with attached outbuildings and barn and about thirty-five acres of meadow, ... https://www.rightmove.co.uk › property-for-sale › property-72409882 Jun 20, 2019 - The substantial portion of a Listed Manor House with attached outbuildings and established walled gardens and paddocks, -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 6 hrs (2019-12-03 18:34:03 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Looking into this a bit more, I have realised that this is not just a house with attached outbuildings. It is specifically the sort of house that used to be very common here in Ariège, where farm animals, the harvest and people were all housed under one roof, with the people living on the upper floor(s). I have only seen one house where people are still living that way, but I am sure that there still are some. So, part of the building would be a barn and the hay barn would generally be on the first floor with farm implements below and the animals would often be next to that with the habitable part of the building above them, getting some extra warmth from the cows during the winter. See the last paragraph of page 668: https://www.persee.fr/doc/rga_0035-1121_1932_num_20_4_5332 Also: https://bit.ly/2YknhAE "Maisons paysannes en Europe occidentale: XVe-XXIe siècles" Jean-René Trochet has several examples with photos. I think that the best way of dealing with this is to retain the French and add an explanation in English. |

So i conclude "under one gable roof -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day 7 hrs (2019-12-04 19:23:57 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- Hello On this question of gable roof or not, I based myself on a single description (the second one with "à deux pans en tuile). I have noted however that all the other references people have given lead to pictures of such houses with... gable roofs. Is this merely a coincidence? Either way, the asker took out this part of my suggestion to be on the safe. side and flagged the segment for the client. Regards SafeTex |
