close off/block the ditches Explanation: I think "bandas" could refer to the irrigation ditches between the rows, and closing them off or opening them could be a way of controlling irrigation: "Olives are, as a rule, planted on friable soils where irrigation water moves downward rather rapidly, and the feeding roots of the trees are inclined to be near the surface; hence the use of a number of irrigation ditches between the rows, through which the water may be passed and the entire surface soil wet within a short time" Olive Growing in the Southwestern United States https://books.google.es › books -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2019-11-28 21:52:04 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- If they are secano, they won't be using any artificial irrigation, just rain water, surely? -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 13 hrs (2019-11-29 08:37:13 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- So a case of barking up the wrong olive tree. |

My guess is that they are closing the plastic sheeting! http://www.hortoinfo.es/index.php/2725-ciento-171216 |
