I think in that context "hold on" means to understand and remember that idea, kind of like this definition to "hold onto" I found in Macmillan dictionary:
Hold onto: [hold on to something] to continue feeling or believing something
example: I always held on to the belief that one day he would succeed.

So, at least the way I understand it, the sentence could be translated as follows:
