Abspachteln

English translation: notch-trowelled

Tech/Engineering - Construction / Civil Engineering / Silicon beading in sandwich elements
German term or phrase: Abspachteln
The context is construction and repair of these compound structural elements known as sandwich elements (to the best of my understanding)
I'm confused by the way abspachteln is used. It's in reference to silicon beads or tracks that are placed between the elements

"Auf der Ersatzverglasung befinden sich bereits werkseitig aufgetragene und abgespachtelte Silikonraupen". As I understand the abspachteln here might best be translated 'leveled off/out' - am I right?

However you also have "Die Qualitätssicherung der Verklebungen muss für die werkseitige Abspachtelungen...durchgeführt werden" or "Prüfscheiben mit einer streifenförmigen Abspachtelung..sind herzustellen" - my best guess is something like 'leveled off/out silicon beads/tracks

English translation:notch-trowelled
Explanation:
"streifenförmigen Abspachtelung" as applied to mating surfaces of larger dimension, where the silicone, once applied, is then notch-trowelled to give a striped, yet uniformly thick, coating for adhesion purposes.

Explanation:
I think "smoothed down" or perhaps "filled in" could work here. Hope it helps :)

trowelling, filling (with painter's putty or similar filler)

Explanation:

1. Untergrund prüfen und reinigen
2. Baumit Supergrund vorbereiten
3. Supergrund auftragen
4. Innenspachtel Fix aufrühren
5. Innenspachtel Fix auftragen
6. Innenspachtel Fix glatt abziehen
7. Innenspachtel Fix abschleifen
8. Innenspachtel Fix bei unebenen Untergründen mehrmalig verarbeiten
https://www.baumit-selbermachen.de/innenausbau-reparatur/anl...

2. Farbe abspachteln

As I.Verrelli highlighted the ambiguous term "Silikon", I like to explain the differences between "Silikon" and "Silikone as well as "Raupe" in the composition "Silikoneraupe".

silicon [CHEM.] das Silizium fachspr.: Silicium kein Pl. Symbol: Si
silicone [CHEM.] das Silikon fachspr.: Silicon Pl.: die Silikone
https://dict.leo.org/englisch-deutsch/silicon

Silicon is a chemical element with the symbol Si and atomic number 14. It is a hard and brittle crystalline solid with a blue-grey metallic lustre; and it is a tetravalent metalloid and semiconductor.

Silicone
Not to be confused with the chemical element silicon.
Silicones, also known as polysiloxanes, are polymers that include any synthetic compound made up of repeating units of siloxane, which is a chain of alternating silicon atoms and oxygen atoms, combined with carbon, hydrogen, and sometimes other elements. They are typically heat-resistant and either liquid or rubber-like, and are used in sealants, adhesives, lubricants, medicine, cooking utensils, and thermal and electrical insulation.

If you cut the nozzle at the correct angle and diameter you can get an almost perfectly formed smooth radiused bead without doing any extra work to it.
:
3 get an empty spray bottle and put a couple of drops of washing up liquid in and fill with water and give in a shake. Spray over the silicone you've just put down allowing the spray to go onto the surface either side of the bead as well as this stops the silicone sticking as you wipe it off.

Tip for Smoothing Silicone Caulk
:
1. Put denatured alcohol in a plant mister type spray bottle.
2. Use a caulking gun to apply a bead of 100% silicone caulk to the joint.
3. Apply a fine mist of denatured alcohol to the caulking bead using the spray bottle.
4. Use your finger to smooth the bead of caulking with your finger before the alcohol evaporates.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks, that's more or less where I'd got to but I still find it hard to get from there to "streifenförmigen Abspachtelung" - is it just something trowelled/smoothed down to a strip shape?
