После ознакомления с множеством источников про наложение швов, анастомоз и операциях на желудке пришел к выводу, что довольно часто употребляется именно такая формулировка. Механические швы их выполняют с помощью сшивающих аппаратов (отсюда их другое название - швы аппаратные), в которых шовным материалом являются металлические СКОБЫ (отсюда вариант staple lines, то есть результат ушивания культей кишки степлером). Что касается термина mechanical sutures, то хотя ссылок на него в специальной литературе (например, Mechanical Sutures in Operations on the Small & Large Intestine & Rectum, by Felicien M. Steichen & Ruth A. Wolsch (Author), William Baker (Illustrator), Robin Lazarus (Illustrator), Virginia Ferrante (Illustrator)) по хирургии и предостаточно (5 260), но в связке с серозно-мышечными швами почти совсем ничего, что свидетельствует об особенностях узуса в этой области. Возможно, коллеги знают лучше, но исходя из доступных публикаций и текстов в электронном корпусе очевидно преимущество staple lines в контексте описываемой ситуации.
