L’hémogramme ou numération de la formule sanguine (NFS) permet de comptabiliser tous les éléments du sang : globules rouges (hématies), globules blancs (leucocytes) et plaquettes. Les globules rouges transportent l’oxygène grâce à l’hémoglobine. Les globules blancs protègent l’organisme contre les infections. Les plaquettes jouent un rôle essentiel dans la coagulation puisqu’elles comblent les brèches provoquées par des coupures ou des plaies juste après qu’elles se produisent et avant que les autres facteurs de coagulation ne se déclenchent. Cet examen permet également d'apprécier des paramètres qualitatifs du sang. Certains paramètres liés à ces éléments sont mesurés (taux d'hémoglobine, volume globulaire moyen = VGM) et d'autres sont calculés (hématocrite, teneur corpusculaire moyenne en hémoglobine = TCMH, concentration corpusculaire moyenne en hémoglobine = CCMH).
