Quando vennero fatti i primi test per descrivere la percezione del colore in termini di miscelazione della luce, venne usato il campo visivo di 2°. Ciò porto alla definizione di Osservatore Standard CIE 2°.
Poichè in pratica i campioni osservati erano di solito più grandi, negli anni ’60 venne effettuato un secondo esperimento con un campo visivo di 10° (mettendo a fuoco un’area simile alla dimensione di una palla da tennis). Nella parte intorno al fovio ci sono sempre più bastoncelli. Ciò portò alla definizione dell’Osservatore Standard CIE 10°. Sinceramente non capisco cosa significhi "per un osservatore a 10 gradi". Qui si parla di campo visivo.
