or

I can't be sure of the parsing, but alt. 2 seems right to me, followed - as it is/ en tant que - with another preposition.

Otherwise, as the into-ENG technical translators at my London translation office used to quip: 'system; case, housing; (switch)box; device, widget. contrivance, upright ? - when in doubt, just call it a unit'.

Asker: Thanks Adrian, but I'm afraid I can't possibly use that. How on earth can a reference to trigger guards for guns possibly explain the function of an air handling component?!
