“This commonly refers to the blood vessels, predominantly arteries and veins, that enter and leave the root of the lung. While the entry point is quite small they fan out rapidly as they divide. The first several generations only are visible on a standard chest x-ray before they become too small to be seen. This gives rise to the characteristic fan pattern seen in the central chest.”
