The data generated by the comparison study are analysed by the mean relative difference procedure of ISO 17994:2014. The principle of the statistical process is to compare the mean relative difference of the two methods and its “confidence interval” with a “predetermined acceptable limit” set around an assumed mean relative difference of 0. For drinking water ISO 17994:2014 suggests a predetermined acceptable limit” of ± 10%, and for environmental waters a limit of ± 20%. If the aim of the evaluation is to assess whether the two methods are comparable then a two-sided test is used. If, however, one method appears to generate higher counts then a one-sided evaluation is only needed to demonstrate superior or comparable performance. If the outcome of the mean relative difference analysis is inconclusive ISO 17994:2014 provides information on how to calculate the number of samples needing to be analysed for a statistically valid conclusion to be reached.
