Validation is defined in ISO 16140-1:2016 as the “establishment of the performance characteristics of a method and provision of objective evidence that the performance requirements for a specified intended use are fulfilled”. This is essentially a combination of the characterisation and verification processes outlined above. The procedure, as described in ISO 16140-2:2016, is usually conducted under the auspices of a central “expert” laboratory and involves multi-laboratory studies on some of the characteristics of a new method and its comparison with a reference method.
