I do not think there is a proper translation. "aleatoire" can be translated by "random", "hazard", "chance", "stochastic". I actually spend a significant part of my career running stochastic simulations of biological processes. And I could not faithfully translate sciences de **l’aléatoire**. But if I had to go on a limb, I would say "science of chance"

In mathematics and computer science, "l'aléatoire" is translated as "randomness," or "random" when used as an adjective: générateur de nombres aléatoires = random number generator. For instance:

PS: quote from p.52 of this 2017 French university thesis submitted for a doctorate in material sciences:

"leur densité de probabilité va être construite par une multitude de variables qui seront piochées aléatoirement grâce à un générateur de nombres aléatoires (RNG : random number generator). Les nombres générés sont qualifiés de pseudo-aléatoires car c’est un processus stochastique qui se sert d’une valeur de référence..." thesesups.ups-tlse.fr/3652/1/2017TOU30119.pdf

This thesis uses the word "random" (English) several times, including to translate aléatoire, but only uses "chance" in the everyday French senses of (1) avoir la chance (in his thank-you section the student expresses gratitude for the opportunities he's had) and (2) likelihood ("il y a une chance égale de tirer sur n'importe quelle partie de la cible").

neutral  philgoddard: Chance is the same as randomness. We're not necessarily looking for a technical term here; I think the use of a single, everyday monosyllable is more effective, and you were wrong to disagree with Nicolas.

  -> The OP's source text is the profile of a graduate school program. Thought a graduate school thesis on a topic related to that program would be a suitable source for the language.
