Interviewer: But you're concerned about one sector in the future, women in particular, who may suffer disproportionately from AI.

Lagarde: I'm glad you bring this up in the context of Artificial Intelligence. Because in this country, in particular, women have space. They're promoted. They're encouraged. Do you know that there's a very large number of science technology graduates here in the Emirates that are women? 70% of students in universities here are women. So, that's really good. Great support for them. Education, space, leadership, labor.

I'm not really sure What she means by space. Is it in the sense of an opportunity? I'm translating this into Arabic. The problem is with synonyms. One word could imply several meanings.

"Latitude" means scope for freedom of action or thought and I think that's what "space" means here in the context. Women are literally given the space or freedom to grow.

When someone is given space it is usually in the context of relationships where someone has the freedom to be an individual while still having the background support of a partner; they are not stultified or confined but have room to grow.

Certainly treatment of women is very different from country to country so it seems she is commending the UAE for allowing women and girls the chance to be educated, and not just in gender specific roles, encouragfing them and giving them the chance of promotion and leadership roles.

Explanation:
I think that she means that women are not restricted. So, one would normally express it somewhat differently in English.

As has been noted, Lagarde is French and, though her English is generally good, it's unfortunate she doesn't seem to get her English language speeches checked by a native speaker of English.
