กตัญญู be grateful Explanation: Hi Simon, Ka-tan-yu (กตัญญู) is translated as [V] be grateful; oblige S.รู้คุณ, แสดงความกตัญญู Ex. เด็กๆ จะถูกสอนให้กตัญญูรู้คุณบิดามารดา (source: NECTEC Lexitron 2 TH-EN) It certainly is a pillar of Thai hierarchical culture, "one must be grateful to their parents, elders, teachers, peers, bosses" etc. Hope this helps! Filial piety Explanation: ( Thai spelling: กตัญญู ) The term itself means gratitude, but the specific term for the expectation of children returning kindness and care out of gratitude towards elder family members is filial piety. From the Bangkok Post: filial piety - respecting your elders; the respect that sons and daughters show to their parents From the Encyclopaedia Britannica: The attitude of obedience, devotion, and care toward one’s parents and elder family members that is the basis of individual moral conduct and social harmony. Consists in putting the needs of parents and family elders over self, spouse, and children, deferring to parents’ judgment, and observing toward them the prescribed behavioral proprieties. https://www.britannica.com/topic/xiao-Confucianism https://www.bangkokpost.com/learning/meaning/filial+piety |
