I've looked into this before, so you should be able to research it if necessary to confirm the exact details, but a '1½' room means in fact one large room that is partly subdivided in some way. Typically, what you have here would be probably 3 bedrooms + a living-/dining-room with open-plan kitchen ('cuisine américaine'), partly divided from the living part by (say) a low kitchen unit, bar etc. It's a way of getting round, for example, the fact that you can't say 'separate kitchen' if it's open-plan.
This is a quite specific usage which does have a distinct and legally-important meaning, so you do really need to get it just right! I think you also find ¼ and/or ¾ too.
Do note that this is quite different from the US usage where we talk about 2½ / 2¼ / 2¾ bathrooms, again with quite specific meanings. |
