Without the Arc Directors, the path would be from the Commutator to ground via the Brush Holders or the String Band.
The gap between the Arc Director and the Commutator should be 0.250” minimum to 0.375” maximum.

If the Arc Director gap is greater than this, it should be discarded and replaced with a new Arc Director.
