Explanation:
My understanding, allowing for the fact that this is flawed, non-native EN, is that this is all about 'scattering' of the midpoint — different detection positions causing spurious departures from what would otherwise be the 'natural' midpoint, with disparate readings causing the midpoint to become less clear / more diffuse.

Possibly also 'valeurs médianes', but we'd need more context to be sure about that one...
