yes I dont believe in this case they actually carried out the softening process, as the broaching filleting or champering was all done en situ, i believed they just (in plainer terms) tried to clean up the teeth.

Ok, if you need a single term for the entire process, then "fillet" would be fine, because the process of welding the reiforcement involves the three steps. But watch the conext, because the "fillet" itself is the reinforcement, not the softening process.

Temos três processos diferentes aqui:
1. Adoçamento (softening) - O metal é aquecido para reduzir a têmpera, ou seja, para amolecê-lo e permitir que seja trabalhado.
2. Brochamento (broaching) - A área é limpa, as impurezas são removidas e depois a superfície é lixada, para poder acrescentar o reforço.
3. Reforço (fillet) - A terceira a última etapa, quando o reforço é finalmente soldado à peça.
Portanto, o termo em questão se refere à primeira fase, a redução da têmpera por amolecimento, ou adoçamento do metal = softening.

very interesting Paulinho, I was going to use CHAMFER which is another term for cleaning up etc, equally fairing would fit the bill I feel and I note Claus suggested filet too, there is a tool specifically for cleaning out cog teeth called a filleter - so now I am lost for choice - your BROACHING may well be the correct technical term tho!!??
