Existen diversas localidades en las que se realizado el registro por entrevistas (xxx), que muestran, además de ser una especie que no puede ser confundida por ser el único mamífero acuático en estas zonas, por ser identificado históricamente como Huallaque en su distribución fluvial, en la que los entrevistados indican que en las últimas décadas su cantidad se ha visto reducida, ya que en los años 50 remontaban el río por decenas, considerando la percepción que suele ser exagerada, de todas formas queda la conclusión que antes se les veía con mayor frecuencia y en mayores cantiadades.

If you don't think the river needs to be mentioned, "swim upstream" would be good, but from the passage you've quoted I think it probably does need to be specified.
