Improvements vs controls

Dear Aida (or Stuart?) As I was explaining before, in clinical trials on investigational drugs, a control group is used to compare the effect of the study drug with the absence of that drug or with another drug. So, in the first case, the control group takes a placebo (a false drug: e.g. water with sugar) or a different drug, while the study drug group takes that drug, i.e. the investigational drug evaluated in the trial. Sometimes the comparison is made between all these three situations.

I agree that 'control' is normally used for control purposes as in a group, controlling something in a study. However, according to what I read in this context, control seems to have another connection (not very clear).
