Here: the phrase "This test should be carried out lagging side of generator capability curve" relates directly to generation of electricity and shifting of the lagging phase by over- or under-excitation of the stator field.

The reactive power output of a synchronous generator is constrained by several factors:
armature current limit, field current limit, and end region heating limit [1]. Each of these limits are modeled as circles in the active-reactive power output plane. The machine must operate within the intersection of these circles. The generator must also operate within maximum and minimum active power limits imposed by the prime mover.
