To diverge a bit from its author, one translation theorist whose book I read while I was a graduate student wrote that when it comes to literary translation, B (the translation) must be "different" from A (the original text) for it to be a work of merit in its own right. I'm assuming he meant that there can never be a perfect fit between the original author and the translator, but I would assume that he was also referring to refracted translations. But in the latter case, some might say that they are not really translations, but an original work that is a reaction to an original text that's in another language.

As I go over Camilo's writing, I can't help but notice a certain wordiness in his writing style. There is a tendency in modern English to simplify everything and make it more palatable to contemporary readers. This raises some interesting questions: (1) When we translators simplify the language of a prolix author, are we being faithful to his/ her writing style? (2) Should style matter anyway or is the translator free to write in his/her own style? (3) Or perhaps try and find a middle ground?
