...I don't believe it's an idiom: In this context, which mentions flirtation, 'nods' and 'winks' are used with their typical meanings. I also believe the comparison in the original (between that which might be considered subtle, i.e., the nod, and that which might be considered obvious, i.e., the wink) is a relevant rhetorical feature that should be maintained (or reproduced) in the translation. And as John points out, a literal translation could work here. To put it plainly, idioms are phrases or sentences that mean something other than what they literally appear to mean; they are expressions of each culture, meaning that they are culturally-bound, that is why it is so hard to export them to another context. Obviously sometimes, equivalent translation can be found, i.e. many can be translated in a literal way, however whenever a literal translation is not possible, there are other options, such as compensatory, explanatory or free translation, the key thing being to keep the flavor of the original.

A mi parecer, y según lo que he leído, se traducen las ideas mediante palabras, y las características de éstas pueden contribuir a crear un sentido de equivalencia. Y claro, cada lengua tiene su gracia. Y por supuesto queremos evitar que nuestras traducciones suenen poco naturales. Ahora bien, cabe señalar que en este caso no se trata de una expresión idiomática fija, sino de una frase en la que se refiere a acciones que se expresan con dos palabras que constan de una sola sílaba, y de una frase que también cuenta con un leve efecto fonoestéstico, which makes me wonder if 'compensation in kind' might be an acceptable approach, where the loss of one effect is compensated-for via the introduction of a different effect, this with a view to producing an overall sense of equivalence. Y claro, podemos pensar en varios ejemplos literales que no sirven, pero quizá algo más o menos literal, tal vez con un verbo como 'asentir', podría funcionar, y no sonar tan y tan mal. Y de nuevo, no tiene que sonar a una frase hecha, porque no suena así de usual en la lengua de partida tampoco (at least to this native speaker). Algunas ideas para que siga la conversación...(para los que se interesen)...

A mi más humilde parecer, y según lo que aprendí en mi carrera de Traducción-Interpretación, se traducen ideas, no palabras, y el uso de las palabras en cada lengua es tan particular de esa lengua que muchas veces no se puede acudir al "calco" porque las formas de decir no son las mismas en una y otra lengua, con lo cual hay que buscar la expresión precisa que alude a la idea del original. Es más la literalidad en este caso en particular corre el riesgo de sonar un tanto artificioso, como sería "una inclinación de cabeza no deja de ser tan eficaz como un guiño de ojo", que sencillamente no se dice en español hablado y suena artificial. Dar con una traducción creativa y a la vez literal es casi un imposible en este sentido. De nuevo, se traduce ideas. Podríamos encontrar muchas variantes de la última traducción literal, y seguirían sonando artificiales o a "cosa traducida". Ahí va otro ejemplo "Un asentimiento es tan bueno como un guiño" o menos literal y más común "a buen entendedor pocas palabras faltan"...pero con esta última también se nos plantearía el problema de si encaja en el contexto, que no es el caso. A vuestra elección lo dejo...

Its literal meaning is understood here, which I see as: **a 'nod' (the less overt gesture of the two, involving a tilting of one's head, as we all know) is (still) as good as a 'wink'** (a more overt gesture we all know is done by closing one eye). I would like to think this could be rendered (but maybe not by me) in a somewhat literal, but still creative, way, while conveying the underlying idea that one can flirt (or transmit a certain 'something') in a way that ís more subtle than the (all-too-common and obvious) wink of an eye. How to do it, I'm not so sure. Maybe 'una leve inclinacion de la frente podria...tanto como un...' Pero esto lo dejo a los talentosos hablantes nativos de castellano. ;))
