Italian term or phrase: da lui descritta e messa in opera
The previous sentence has described how the author was probably aware of how strong and bombastic this book was for the period it was written, and then:

"Allo stesso tempo, però, forse, egli stesso, non sapeva di aver creato una cosa ancor più forte e trasversale della stessa storia, da lui descritta e messa in opera nel libro"

I get the gist, but I am not sure how this fits in to the previous phrases, unless it is just a rather repetitive style of talking. It seems to say the author created this book, but then goes on to repeat the same thing again in different words, i.e. "described and produced by him"? Or have I misunderstood?

Explanation:
Hi

I would keep what you wrote adapting it like this:

However, perhaps he didn't realize, at that time, that his narrative and the publishing of the book/work would have created something even more powerful and more far-reaching than the story itself.

I think far-reaching is what is meant by trasversale here

neutral  philgoddard: It doesn't say anything about publishing as far as I can see, and you're effectively saying " the narrative is more powerful than the story", which doesn't make sense to me.

-> Publishing could be omitted or replaced by 'included in the book' and I think Lara used 'narrative' to avoid the repetition of story.

put in place and described by him

Explanation:
'da lui descritta e messa in opera' refers to the story of the book. This concept is repeated as opposed to an inspected and greater message contained in it that not even the author initially expected to provide.
