You have provided one meaning of the term. However, in context, it cannot be a reference to the "cashier's desk" which backtranslates as "guichet". In a dematerialized context, "caisse" obviously has meaning, but "cashier's desk" is physical, material, not immaterial, not in English, that is. If this were my translation, this would be on my ask-the-client list. It looks like an internal regional or national code identifying the office or site that issues the bank's statements. Again, were this my translation, with the name of the bank, together with other details, I'd search with the code to see what it throws up. However, I think Musilang was in a rush to get this done on time and there was probably no time left to exchange with the client.
I wonder if it is not a reference to a particular site/ localization within the institution.
In any event, without information as to what searches you have done and options you have considered, we could simply undertake searches that you have already done. We'd be wasting your time and also ours. So, from a purely practical point of view, if you have the time to post a question, you also have to time to stick in one or two indications of terms and/or sources you have considered. ;-)
Alison, don't they use "sort codes" in the UK for "code guichet"? I'm asking because I see UK under your name.
I would say it's a statement from"Mo****nq" (online bank, subsidiary of CM) because of the reference to CTC (Compte Tout Compris) in the link provided by the asker.
That's usually called a 'code guichet', and I don't think you'd ever get one in that format: it's usually NN-NNN, and wouldn't logically have 4 leading zeroes.
My bank (which is why I wanted to know WHICH bank it was!) refers to itself as a "caisse régionale" — even though it is a national 'enseigne', it seems to be very much compartmentalized on a regional basis; but it's hard to see in what way this would apply here, which is why more context is vital.
"Caisse" would be the financial institution. (savings bank = caisse d'épargne) Code agence/banque. Bank codes consist of five digits so it may fit the context.
I never expect anyone to do my research for me. In the case of this specific question, I was hoping someone would recognize it from past experience. It's ok if no one recognizes it.
As we speak, I'm in the middle of the translation which is due in a few hours, so I can't post details about what I've researched. I have done that in the past, and I would now if I wasn't pressed for time.
I don't think you should expect potential answerers to do your research for you, as KudoZ rules suggest, you should state what options you are considering and which you have rejected. Part of the reason for this is to avoid people being lazy and not doing their own research first...
As for not mentioning company names, clearly you shouldn't do this if the translation is a potentially confidential one for a product by acme Engineering Co. or whatever — but unless you are actually translating this document on behalf of the specific bank, then it is hardly a breach of confidentiality to simply mention the name of e.g. a widely-known High Street bank; one of the reasons this is important is that I have seen this term used differently by the different banks (including, for example, the Caisse d'Épargne itself!)
The actual content of the bank statement if of little importance, which is why I didn't ask for it. But it is useful, though, to know that this is a retail bank, rather than say a corporate one.
A moderator told me I shouldn't mention company names here, so I want to comply with that. As for the meanings of caisse, they're listed here at proz, and everywhere else. They don't fit the context, such as "fund."
The bank statement has very mundane transactions, like credit card payments, bank wires, etc.
Which translations have you found, and of those, which are you consdiering / rulling out?
It possibly depends a bit on the specific bank, and whether that number is a serial no. of some sort that is incrementing. My own bank uses a 'caisse', but not with that sort of number.
It would probably help if you could reveal which particualr bank this is?
