Context: a citation from the Gazzetta di Parma about Giovanni Puzzi, a famous virtuoso of the horn.

Che suoni puri e dolci sa egli far fare al corno cui anima il suo fiato! Che limpidezza! Che possesso! Egli si fa giuoco delle difficoltà; le affronta le assale con tanto di coraggio e di fortuna, che non si scorgono, per così dire, se non quando sono superate. La sua modestia poi dà risalto al suo talento ammirabile che a lui medesimo sembra di non avere» (Mongrédien, 2008, III, p. 592).

I think the idea here is that the horn player brings the best/makes the most of the horn, but I'm not sure if that would be a suitable rendering.
