Madam Director Explanation: I live in South America where this term is used a lot. To a native English-speaker it may sound strange. But in Spanish you are showing recognition for the person's title as well as the fact that she may be married. |

Sometimes, letters in journals may be full-length contributions, often in response to articles in previous issues. Either way, letters would begin "dear editor" or "to the editor", not simply "editor". Definition b1 in my reference shows that director can mean editor, and lower down it translates "cartas al director" as " correspondence column".
