French term or phrase: doctorante
When translating this into UK English, is it OK to use the term "PhD student", or is that too specific to the British context and would the term "doctoral student" be preferable? The student concerned is a student at a French university.

As there are different types of doctorate (see link), I would be tempted to use doctoral student.

agree  Charles Davis: Absolutely. Even if there were only one kind of doctorate, it would not be a PhD because there is no such degree in France. Similarly one should not refer to someone in France studying for a "BA".
