Nel corso degli ultimi secoli dell'epoca romana, quando ormai si era formato l'Impero, si moltiplicarono i latifondi agricoli, ossia dei grandi possedimenti terrieri gestiti da efficienti aziende padronali. Le "ville" romane erano formate da edifici residenziali e rurali, adibiti alle diverse pratiche agricole, raggruppati intorno a uno spazio centrale che includeva anche officine e fornaci. Queste "ville" rappresentavano il fulcro dell'azienda agricola e, se inizialmente si sorreggevano sul lavoro degli schiavi, in seguito si avvalsero di uomini liberi che con le famiglie contadine risiedevano all'interno della proprietà.

  -> I don't see the problem. Basically it's talking about family-run plantations like in the US South in the 1800s. So I think it's an appropriate translation.
neutral  writeaway: agree with Barbara. the term company is incongruous in any case (also with reference to Southern Plantations in the early 19th century/imo you have to rework it. read the context provided by Asker
