The reason for this is that the followers are almost always hydraulic and the internal adjustment on the followers is quite limited Also, the followers are very short on some engines and, the more the lobe base circle is ground down, the higher the follower lifts out of the bore in the cylinder head (high borę wear can be the result). There is also the prospect of follower contact with other parts of the camshaft if the base circle is reduced too much.
