Hi!

I am translating a book review and I have doubts about the meaning of "heat" and "light" in the following context:

It begins by explaining how I write an opinion column. A column is made of three basic ingredients: 1) Your value set – what is the philosophy you are trying to promote? 2) How do you think The Machine works, that is what do you think are the biggest forces shaping more things in more places in more ways on more days? And 3) what have you learned about people and culture – how The Machine affects people and cultures and how they, in turn, impact The Machine. Mix all three just right and you’ll create a column that produces either heat or light.

I would say that by "heat" here the author is meaning "controversy" and that by "light" the author is meaning "enlightenment". English and Spanish speakers alike, what would you say? Please let me know. Thank you!
