itadakimasu Explanation: Japanese people say "itadakimasu" before a meal when the meal is shared with family, friends, guests or colleagues. After a meal, before leaving the table, they say "gochisosama" (long second 'o') to show appreciation for the meal. You can also say "gochisomsama" to restaurant staff when leaving to show your gratitude. Unfortunately I don't have Japanese characters on my computer. I hope this explanation will help you anyway. Taken from Lonely Planet Phrase Book Japanese -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 20 mins (2004-02-26 03:37:55 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- The pronunciation leaves out the \'u\' at the end -> itadakimas -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 22 mins (2004-02-26 03:40:13 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- By the way... \"cheers\" would be \"kampai\". Say this before drinking. |
